Following another extraordinary day on Friday, a first time Grand Slam finalist is now confirmed in the bottom half of the draw – following Marin Cilic’s defeat to Diego Schwartzman. Saturday sees the remaining 16 men in the top half of the draw battle it out at Flushing Meadows. Rafael Nadal & Roger Federer are still on course for a historic meeting in the semi-finals but there is plenty of tennis to be played before then.
Here are our picks of the third round matches taking place in New York on Saturday:
Rafael Nadal vs Leonardo Mayer
Number 1 seed Nadal has breezed into round 3 with wins over Dusan Lajovic and Taro Daniel. The Majorcan has looked solid on the hard courts so far this week but as week 2 looms – he will be fully aware of the need to be on top of his game. His opponent in round 3 Leonardo Mayer, has had a solid year and won the German Open in Hamburg back in July. The Argentine has had only one win over a top 10 player in his career though and this looks a big ask for him.
Head to Head
Nadal has a perfect 3:0 record over the qualifier Mayer with their last meeting coming at the 2014 French Open. Nadal is 1/10 with Coral for the in whilst Mayer is 8/1 to cause a major shock with UniBet.
This one looks like a forgone conclusion – backing Rafa to win by 3 sets to 0 and there to be fewer than 30.5 games in the match looks a shrewd double at 2.96/1 with UniBet.
Roger Federer vs Feliciano Lopez
Federer has had back-to-back 5-sets matches on the Arthur Ashe stadium court and he’ll be feeling the need to get his business done a little sooner as the tournament progresses. He looked some way of his best against Frances Tiafoe in round 1 before battling past old rival Mikhail Youzhny in the last round. He’ll be fully aware of the task at hand against Lopez who’s serve and volley game is a match for anyone on any surface.
Head to Head
Federer holds a remarkable 12:0 lead in the head to head. Two of the longest serving members on the tour, they have met at this stage of the US Open before – 10 years ago – back in 2007. Federer looks quite good at 2/9 with Ladbrokes whilst Lopez is 4/1 with Bet 365 to break his duck.
Federer could well be feeling the strain of back to back 5 setters but seems to have a mental stronghold over Lopez, backing Federer to win by 3 sets to 1 looks a good punt at 11/4 with Sky Bet.
David Goffin vs Gael Monfils
Two of the world’s top 20 players meet on Saturday in what promises to be one of the matches of the round. David Goffin has had an injury stricken 2017 but looks to be finding some form in New York whilst Monfils, a semi-finalist here last year will be eager to take down a fellow top 10 competitior. Both men had to dig deep in round 2 and come through in 5 sets, Goffin battled past Guido Pella whilst Monfils edged his way past home favourite Donald Young.
Head to Head
This is the 4th meeting between these 2 men with Monfils leading the head to head 2:1. Their game styles are quite contrasting which should add an entertainment value for the spectators. Monfils the 8/13 with Coral despite his lower ranking and Goffin will fancy his chances at 7/5 with 32 Red.
This could well be the tie of the round – it will come down to how much energy they have left in the tank following a rainy day on Tuesday and a 5 setter each on Thursday. Backing the match to go to at least 4 sets and there to be a tie-break in the match looks a good double at 2.20/1 with Bet365.
There are 8 matches to choose from so here’s our men’s round 3 accumulator:-
- Dominic Thiem vs Adrian Mannarino – Mannarino to win
- Damir Dzumhur vs Andrey Rublev – Rublev to win
- Phillip Kohlschreiber vs John Millman – Kohlschreiber to win
Backing these 3 players to win pays 8.96/1 with Marathon Bet. (Odds: http://www.perfectbettingonline.co.uk)
